Southern Comfort

Spanx HQ is located in Atlanta–a city nicknamed Hot-lanta for it’s steamy weather. But this week, the ATL has been chilled by a serious cold snap. With temps in the single digits (and wind chills below zero!), the Spanx-ters are cooking up some of our favorite winter foods.

The Arctic blast is hitting everyone hard, so we thought we’d share some of our recipes to help you fend off the frigid temps. From steamy soups to decadent desserts, it’s the perfect time of year to indulge in some culinary comfort.

Check out this recipe for Spanx-y Red Velvet Hot Chocolate (care of Guru of the Outdoors), and visit the “Spanx-ters Love…” board on Pinterest for even more belly-warming delights!

  1. 4 cups whole milk
  2. 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  3. 10 ounces semi-sweet baking chocolate, coarsely chopped
  4. 2 teaspoons McCormick® Red Food Color
  5. 1 teaspoon McCormick® Pure Vanilla Extract
Vanilla Whipped Cream
  1. 1/2 cup heavy cream
  2. 2 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar
  3. 1/2 teaspoon McCormick® Pure Vanilla Extract
  1. For the Hot Chocolate, place milk and granulated sugar in medium saucepan. Bring to simmer on medium heat, stirring to dissolve sugar.
  2. Remove from heat. Stir in chocolate with wire whisk until melted. Stir in food color and vanilla. Pour into serving cups. Serve with marshmallows and Vanilla Whipped Cream, if desired.
  3. For the Vanilla Whipped Cream, beat heavy cream, confectioners’ sugar and vanilla in medium bowl with electric mixer on high speed until stiff peaks form.

Spanx-ter Resolutions

With New Year’s Eve less than a week away, the Spanx-ters are making resolutions for 2014. Check out our plans for the coming year and share your own in the comments!

Callie: I want to get in shape for my wedding in July!

Charlotte: I definitely want to be in shape for my wedding in October, but I’m also excited to get started on design projects around the house.

Lauren: Is it cliche to say I’m going to eat healthier?

Michelle: I plan to get involved with more charitable causes. I’ve learned a lot about giving from working at Spanx and I want to find my own ways to give back.

Alison: I want to spend more time on hobbies that make me happy: Take a dance class, find new music and food festivals and even try my hand at standup comedy. Eric: I want to make time to see more live music.

Missy: My husband and I just bought our first house, so I want to get settled in so we can start entertaining our friends and family there.

Maggie: I’ll be spending as much time with my husband and our beautiful new baby boy as I can!

Baby It’s Cold Outside!

We celebrated a new crop of Spanx-ter moms-to-be at a Baby it’s Cold Outside-themed baby shower on December 12. The winter theme carried across the snacks (snow cones, hot chocolate) and décor (snowflakes hung from the ceiling and stuck to the windows).

The moms (all of whom are having boys!) compared baby bumps and chatted about what to expect before they were given gifts from each department and, of course, received sterling silver Tiffany & Co. spoons from Laurie Ann and Sara.

Congratulations to moms-to-be Carrie, Allyson, Emily, Wendy Alexis, and Hilary (not pictured)!

‘Tis The Season

One of the coolest things about working at SPANX is the retail therapy. No, we’re not talking about shopping for the latest and greatest (though that’s pretty awesome, too), we’re talking about the annual Neiman Marcus holiday shopping day! It’s when the Spanx-ters get to spend two hours shopping the store to pick out a special something for themselves.

As Sara and our CEO Laurie Ann explain it, they offer up the chance to shop this way to make sure we’re indulging ourselves. Typically, we spend this time of year shopping for others, and Sara and Laurie Ann give us this opportunity so that we can treat ourselves for working hard all year long. We are grateful to work at a company that gives back as often as SPANX does, so taking a little time to treat ourselves is icing on the holiday cake!

The location makes it extra special: Neiman Marcus was the first retailer to carry SPANX! Continuing this tradition there year after year brings everything full circle.

SPANX Gets Active

After indulging in turkey, stuffing, cranberries and more today, we’re already thinking ahead to our post-Thanksgiving workout. We interviewed some of our sportiest Spanx-ters about their tips and tricks for working off the turkey. And of course, we polled them on their favorite SPANX Active pieces to wear while they’re at it!

SPANX Active Pick: The Convertible Knee Pant
Workout: I hate cardio machines, so hitting the heavy bag is my go-to workout for cardio and arms. Plus any holiday stress melts away when you’re pounding away at a heavy bag!

SPANX Active Pick: I like to wear the Shaping Compression Girl Short paired with the Streamlined Tank
Workout: My favorite work out is Hot Yoga: The room is set to 90 degrees. It is a great way to start the day (if you can get out of bed!!) and I love that I sleep like a rock that following night.

SPANX Active Pick: The Shaping Compression Knee Pant is what I like to wear while working out.
Workout: Since we travel to NOLA for the holidays, I keep my workouts simple while I’m there. I normally spend the morning walking with my parents and then I need something more intense. I follow this plan I found on Pinterest. It’s a quick burn when you’re on the go:

30 Jumping Jacks
5 Pushups
25 High Knees
7 Burpees
10 Crunches
7 Squats
5 Pushups

Repeat 3-5 times!

SPANX Active Pick: I usually work out in the Shaping Compression Crop Color Pop with a Racerback Sports Bra (of course!)
Workout: I would say that my favorite work out after a big Turkey-Day would be a full-body circuit workout that includes: Standing jump squats 10 reps (3 rounds of each exercise). Walking lunges 10 reps then 90 minute sprints,1 minute bicycle crunches, and 1 minute of Russian twist exercise with a medicine ball then sit-ups for 1 minute.

SPANX Active Pick:The Power Pant is perfect for the cool weather.
Workout:I love to hike. One of my favorite trails is Blood Mountain: the highest peak of the Appalachian Trail in Georgia. It’s a good 2 hour workout with a great view.

Title: Office Administrator
SPANX Active Pick: I love the Ribbed Cami with Shelf Bra. It’s perfect and my active wear drawer is stuffed full of them.
Workout: I like to think ahead when it comes to stuffing myself with stuffing (and turkey, and pie, and green beans…) on Turkey Day. I signed up for a raceThanksgiving morning! Almost all cities have at least one race the morning of. This way when I am done racing, I feel like I have earned a feast.
